Jarvis still in favor of new SBC Tournament format
By Marcus Nelson
If the Sun Belt Conference had kept the format it has used since 2007, FAU would be playing a home game tonight vs. the South Alabama Jaguars in the first-round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
Instead, the Owls and Jaguars will head to Hot Springs, Ark. to fight for the right to survive. The reward is to play again the next day instead of what would have been a few days of rest.
When I talked to Mike Jarvis on Tuesday, I remembered that when the Sun Belt Conference announced a few months ago there would no longer be first-round games on campus sites he was in favor of the change.
I expected him to have a change of heart when I asked him Tuesday about the format change. After all, FAU could certainly use a few days of rest between its first-round game and a quarterfinal matchup vs. Troy.
Instead Jarvis reiterated his support of having everyone play in Hot Springs,
"This how it should be played," Jarvis said. "All the kids deserve to play in a tournament atmosphere...I'm still in favor of it."
I agree with Jarvis. Those first-round games at campus sites didn't feel like post-season basketball. Instead those game felt like an extension of the regular-season with the winners going on to the "real" tournament.
