The 2012-13 season begins tonight for Florida Atlantic with the first contest of the year.

The women's soccer team will face Jacksonville at 7 p.m. to start what surely will be an eventful year for all of FAU's teams.

Jacksonville's Marie Weckhurst scored the match's only goal with just over one minute remaining in the extra time on Friday as the Owls (0-1) fell to the Dolphins (1-0) in the season-opener.

  • Owl-Star: Senior goalkeeper Ashley Lantes had seven saves.
  • Key stat: The game was scoreless for 108 minutes
  • Up Next: The Owls will travel to the FGCU Embassy Suites Classic to battle Illinois State University on Friday, August 24 and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sunday, August 26.

The Owls allowed three goals in the first 15 minutes and fell to 0-2 in a loss to the Redbirds (2-0-1) in the Embassy Suites Classic in Fort Myers on Friday.

  • Owl-Star: Claire Emslie led the Owls with four shots
  • Key stat: FAU was outshot 6-1 in the first half.
  • Up Next: The Owls will wrap up tournament action Saturday at 7 p.m. against Wisconsin-Green Bay, which is 0-2 after losing to FGCU 2-1 on Friday.

Women's Soccer: FAU 2, Wisconsin-Green Bay 1 (Final)

Freshman midfielder Claire Emslie scored a goal and added an assist as the Owls (1-2) defeated the Phoenix (0-3) in the Embassy Suites Classic in Fort Myers in a match played on Saturday due to concerns over Tropical Storm Isaac.

  • Owl Star: Junior midfielder Ellie Smith scored her first career goal and the first goal of the season for FAU in the 26th minute.
  • Key Stat: FAU had a 10-4 edge in shots.
  • Up Next: The Owls will play another tournament next weekend, traveling to Las Vegas to play Northern Arizona University on Friday and UNLV on Sunday.

> Women's Soccer: UNLV 2, FAU 1 (Final - 2 OT)
UNLV's Susie Bernal scored the game-winning goal just over one minute into the second 10-minute overtime period as the Owls fell to the Rebels at the Lady Rebel Classic in Las Vegas on Sunday.

  • Owl-Star: Freshman forward Taylor Sorrels scored her first career goal in the fourth minute. Sorrels beat UNLV goalkeeper Kylie Wassell with a blast from 25 yards out.
  • Key Stat: Florida Atlantic had more scoring opportunities than UNLV, having a 7-6 advantage of shots on goal.
  •  "The girls gave great effort today while playing in over 100-degree temperatures," said FAU women's soccer coach Brian Dooley. "I am proud of the players' effort (three members played the entire match). I believe good things are going to come for this team in the future."
  • Up Next: FAU will wrap up its five-match road swing with a contest against in-state foe Stetson on Saturday at 2 p.m. in DeLand.

Congratulations to FAU's Claire Emslie, who was named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week.

The coaching staff is very high on her and she is off to a great start.

The Hilltoppers scored the winning goal four minutes into the extra session on Friday in Boca Raton.

  • Key Stat: Senior goalkeeper Ashley Lantes made eight saves. That performance gave her 301 saves so far during her career - only the second player in school history to achieve 300 or more saves.

Freshman midfielder Claire Emslie broke a scoreless tie in the 87th minute with her team-leading ninth goal of the season as FAU defeated Louisiana-Monroe on Friday in Boca Raton.

  • Owl-Star: GK Ashley Lantes earned her second shutout of the season and made four saves in net, leaving her two saves shy of breaking Molly Keating’s school record of 321 saves in a career.
  • Instant Message: “This was an important win for us. The girls fought until the end,” said FAU coach Brian Dooley. “We had a lot of chances early in the game. Fortunately, Claire converted on her scoring chance late in the game.”
  • Key Stat: The Owls held a commanding 27-8 shot advantage over the Warhawks, including a 16-4 edge on shots on goal.

I 100% agree. From what I saw of the team in the belt Tourney vs. N. Texas (who being No.1 Belt seed were only ok - not real good or even close to dominant), we play a very uncompetitive style or brand of football which will only sometimes win vs. weak opponents and has little chance vs.quality opponents. Maybe that is due to lack of talent or just lame Coaching - in either case, the Coaches fault)!
