Sorry I didn't get to this earlier. Was traveling across the state. Yes, it is true. Diersen to Northern Illinois. This didn't take Pelini by surprise. He knew Diersen and new Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey were good friends. In fact, I think Pelini expected it.

Sorry to see him leave, but wish him the very best.  I met him and he was really a nice man.  I know the players liked him as well.

Diersen leaving must not have been a surprise.  According to the website FootballScoop.com, we already have a replacement:

FAU: Sources tell us that Miami (OH) special teams coordinator / linebackers coach Matt Edwards will join the FAU staff.

Edwards coached on Pete Rekstis' staff at Miami-Oh and Kent State. He has defensive line experience and special teams experience and will immediately become one of the most experienced FBS coaches on the staff. Seems like a good fit.

Have confirmed from an FAU source that Edwards is expected to be on the Owls' staff next year. Paperwork isn't complete so it's not offical, but if everything goes as expected a formal announcement should come shortly.

im sure he is a good coach BUT when is pellini going to get it that he needs coaches with florida ties not OHIO!!! THIS IS ABSURD..College football is ALL about recruiting and by the time these guys figure it out they will be gone  there are so many top players in south florida that would stay home if we had the right coaches recruiting

Nick, why exactly does FAU need coaches with Florida ties? All of the assistants have recruiting "zones", almost all determined by areas they're familiar with. Do you realize how much D1 talent comes out of Ohio? Pelini wants toughness, esp. along the lines. He SHOULD be hitting Ohio and the midwest! This whole "Florida ties" thing is SO overrated. You realize that a team can't be all skill guys, right? And BTW, it's Pelini...P-E-L-I-N-I.

 I ASSURE you I know MORE than enough about recruiting and GUARANTEE I know more than you about what Coach Pelini is looking for. Don't just hide behind a message board moniker. Let's have a constructive dialogue. Why do they need more coaches with Florida ties Nick?

by not having any coaches with relationships in south florida or florida in general you dont have any personal realtions with  HS coaches (this is huge) or first hand knowledge of player talent.  It takes years to develop these relationships, other than Jared Allen, no one on his staff including pelini has any type of relationship. By saying that he go to Ohio for players is a failed strategy. First off on the econmomic side that hits on your buget..Every major school in the nation gets players, NOT JUST SKILL. from florida. FAU has an advantage that hasnt been taken advantage of as yet, with that being that alot of the players that leave florida would prefer to stay at home and have family be able to see them play. they want alternative to U Miami, great exampe id bland kid from st thomas, a lineman by the way, wants to stay close to home..great pick up for FAU.

You will see what im talking aobut when Butch davis comes to FIU..he is a game changer in recuriting for them...lets shelve the discussion unitl after he brings in his staff..lets see where they are from and where thier ties are..  Finally, I think pelini did a ice job this year...but he will get not enough high quality  players soon enough to reach his goals..Frankly the Akron job, one pelini wanted by the way, would of been perfect for him and the staff he put together. He would have turned the program around quickly. he is a good coach

The theory that you need to hire coaches with pre-existing relationships with the coaches in local high schools is absurd.  So if a new coach FAU hires picks up the phone and says: "Hello Coach XX?  Yes, this is XXX, I'm the new DL coach at FAU and I'd like to come meet with you", the HS coach is going to say, "No thanks, you aren't from Florida, forget about me ever telling my players to sign with you"??  The tie to Florida that is important is that the guy is now coaching at FAU.  The current staff has been here for a year now.  Do you think that they are from Ohio matters at this point?  Of course not. 

As for Butch Davis, he is not a "game changer".  Nothing really changes for FIU with Davis.  They had a popular local guy in Christobal was a great recuiter and mediocre game day coach, which is exactly how everyone describes Davis.  Anyway, by your theory, wouldn't the HS coaches that loved Mario now tell their kids not to go to FIU after how they treated him? He had great relationships with them.
