 The stadium will now be call the longest yard??.. I know it's hard to get Sponcers and donors for anything now, but do the university want to do this? Remember it cost more to incarcerate than educate. This corp. make millions of dollars to incarcerate our young and sometime wrongfully convicted youth. Think about that, all you Owl fans. Salute the Hoot, not the almighty dollar bill.

 Let the prison/football stadium jokes begin. I'll start:

• Instead of giving away shirts, the FAU student government will give away striped prison jump suits.
• New 15-yard penalty for unnecessary shanking
• CSC ushers will carry batons and hand guns
• Team will walk onto the field with Fulsom Prison blaring.

 Have to wonder whether this will make it easier or harder to recruit football players with criminal records. If a player from a larger school gets arrested, can a judge order him to transfer to FAU?

 Easy there burrowingowl....this is a good thing.Don't put blame on a company that makes a profit on providing a service that is needed due to our crazy society. I wish I had thought of privatizing corrections. Thank you Geo Group, our A.D. and all the donors to FAU . As far as jokes...it;s early and my coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

I don't see why what this company does should matter.  It's not like they are cooking and selling meth.  They are a company that provides a necessary service, that makes over $1 billion a year in revenues, and is traded on the NYSE.  They also happen to be in Boca and are run by an FAU alum.  Good for both GEO and FAU for looking outside the box here. 

 Take a poll and find out if this is a good thing. Wow we now have to advertise prisons. F.A.U. Home of the state pen.

Oh please.  We aren't advertising prisons.  Naming the stadium after the GEO Group doesn't mean FAU is pro-criminal.  Someone has to operate prisons and apparently it's a profitable business.  This is what the company does from Wikipedia:  "GEO conducts its business through four business segments: U.S. corrections segment; International services segment; GEO Care segment; and Facility construction and design segment. The U.S. corrections segment primarily encompasses GEO's U.S.-based privatized corrections and detention business. The International services segment primarily consists of GEO's privatized corrections and detention operations in South Africa, Australia and the United Kingdom. International services reviews opportunities to further diversify into related foreign-based governmental-outsourced services on an ongoing basis. The GEO Care segment, which is operated by GEO's wholly owned subsidiary GEO Care, Inc., comprises GEO's privatized mental health and residential treatment services business, all of which is currently conducted in the U.S. GEO's Facility construction and design segment primarily consists of contracts with various state, local and federal agencies for the design and construction of facilities for which GEO has been awarded management contracts."  OH THE HORROR!!

 Should prisons be profitable or just institutions to house criminals. Salute the hoot instead of the almighty dollar. Go OWL"S!

Before we go jumping on the GEO Group for what they do, I should mention that I keep hearing the words "corporate philanthropy" used in conjuntion with this deal. The CEO is an FAU grad. If his company wants to make a contribution to his alma mater, why shouldn't FAU accept the offer? I'm not a fan of corporate names on stadiums, but is GEO Group really any worse then some of those Dot Com businesses that no longer exist or financial firms that were badly mismanged? I wonder if any of the people at Enron who lent their name to the baseball park in Houston are now guests at a GEO Group facility.

It's not like the stadium is going to be called Alcatraz - although that would be kind of cool.

On a side note - will they have to relocate all the burrowing owls because they keep tunneling under the prison walls?

Football in Prison-dise?

The GEO Group FAU stadium deal is being announced as a "gift" as opposed to a marketing deal. It will, however, be called GEO Group Stadium and there will be a sign for all to see. I realize FAU is a little new to this sports marketing stuff, but this certainly has a marketing aspect for the GEO Group. 

The deal is $6 million to be paid over 12 years, so get accustomed to calling it GEO Group Stadium for quite some time.
