BOCA RATON – Before FAU’s game vs. Troy on Wednesday , Owls junior guard Lyrell Barfield told her teammates they need to concentrate on playing as a team and having fun.
The Owls seemed to be having a pretty good time in their 83-60 victory over the Trojans, especially in the first five minutes of the game when FAU raced to a 21-3 lead.
“I told my teammates ‘let’s go out and get a great win, have fun together and enjoy the win as a team,” said Barfield, who scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half.
The Owls did just that and needed less than seven minutes to take a 20-point lead.
“The fast start was really nice,” said FAU coach Chancellor Dugan. “We came out very focused. We took care of the ball in that spurt. We rebounded the ball and our defense stepped it up. When we are clicking like that, we can score baskets in bunches.”
Barfield was 7-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-5 on 3-point attempts.
“I felt great about my shot tonight and I wasn’t hesitant to shoot at all,” Barfield said.
The Owls (7-7, 3-1) shot 60.6 percent on 20-of-33 shooting from the field in the first half and led 47-21 at halftime.
In the second half, the Owls didn’t cool off much as they shot 56.5 percent on 13-of-23 shooting from the field.
“I think our half-court offense looked a lot better than it had in the past,” Dugan said. “We’ve been working on shooting a lot – especially layups – and that paid off tonight.”
Guard Brittany Bowe had 15 points and 6 assists. Carla Stubbs (12 points), Erica Caldwell (11 points) and Brana Kone (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Owls.
