BOCA RATON – Florida Atlantic players had a surprise for coach Chancellor Dugan right after the Owls defeated Arkansas State 56-52 on Saturday at FAU Arena.
Dugan was greeted with a Gatorade bath on the way to the lockerroom following the victory – Dugan’s 300th as a college coach.
“It was nice to get it at home,” Dugan said. “I’ve always had teams that may not have always been the most talented teams, but they have always worked their ass off.”
That grit was on display against the Red Wolves.
With the Owls holding onto a 50-49 lead with :54 on the clock, freshman guard Kimberly Smith hit a 20 foot jumper that gave the Owls a two-possession lead.
“They say if you are open, take the shot and be confident in yourself” said Smith, who had seven points.
Freshman guard Takia Brooks made three of four free throws down the stretch to secure the victory and snap a five game losing streak.
Brooks was making her first start of the season after sitting out the first games with eligibility issues, but quickly has become acclimated.
“It’s been tough but I have a great coach and great teammates who can get me through it,” said Brooks said. “I am getting more comfortable running the point. My first game I was a little shaky, but I think I’m fitting right in.”
FAU guard Lyrell Barfield led all scorers with 18 points
