FAU Athletic Director Pat Chun says a report stating that the Owls will officially join Conference USA for the 2013 season is premature.
"That would not be accurate," Chun said. "It's not a done deal. We're still in the process of evaluating everything. There's a lot of variables in the air."
OwlAccess.com first wrote there was a possibility FAU would join Conference USA for the 2013 season back in November.
On Wednesday Patrick Magee, a reporter for the Sun-Herald in Mississippi tweeted: Florida Atlantic and MTSU will join Conference USA for the 2013 football season - a year earlier than expected. The Sun-Herald covers C-USA member Southern Mississippi.
Even though the deal may not be complete, it does appear the Owls are moving forward with the idea they could compete in C-USA in the fall. A source told OwlAccess.com that the conference has asked FAU administrators to begin working with other C-USA schools to determine whether schedules could be rearranged to make the move happen.
"Scheduling is a big piece of it for all the sports involved," Chun confirmed. "The finances are a big part of it for FAU, too."
Chun says he expects to know for sure whether the Owls will play in Conference USA by the time next week's C-USA meetings wrap up. Conference presidents and athletic directors are holding that conference in Miami beginning January 22.
In November FAU announced it was leaving the Sun Belt Conference for Conference USA by 2014 at the latest.
