Add another player to FAU’s ledger.
The Owls have picked up another commitment - this player from the Treasure Coast hopes to make an impact on the defensive side of the ball, and could also be a real asset on special teams.
The commitment came three days after the player returned from his official visit to FAU.
"I had already figured out before I left their that I was goinig to commit, so it was easy," Sebastian River safety Cortez Ash said. "I was happy to commit. I’m the first in my family to go out and do it - go D-I. It’s a dream come true."
A 6-foot-2, 180-pound safety, Ash told FAUOwlAccess.com last week that if he was offered he would probably commit. The offer didn’t come over the weekend, though.
Ash said that offensive coordinator Darryl Jackson came to his home on Tuesday, and made the offer.
“They (FAU) players are motivated and they want to make something happen,” Ash said. “That’s what I want to do. I’m ready to be around motivated people who are trying to build a program and do good things.”
The high point of the visit for Ash was Friday’s dinner. Ash said the players were told they could order anything they wanted off a restaurant menu, so he promptly asked for 50 chicken wings and downed them all.
His commitment did not shock Sebastian River coach Randy Bethel.
“I’m not surprised,” Sebastian River coach Randy Bethel said of Cortez Ash’s commitment. “FAU is a growing program. They have it going in the right direction and he wants to be a part of it.”
Primarily a safety, the Sharks also utilized Ash as a linebacker.
He also displayed what Bethel described as a “crazy, crazy knack” for blocking kicks. Ash blocked eight kicks or punts during his senior season.
Wake Forest and Grambling were also talking to Ash about a visit, but he said he does not intend to take them.
Going elsewhere: Panama City-Rutherford offensive lineman Sean Watson was originally slated to take an official visit to FAU this past weekend, but ended up at Arkansas instead.
The week prior he was at Florida International and next weekend he plans to go to Jacksonville. Arkansas, though, made a big impression.
“Right now it’s Arkansas,” Watson said. “It’s the best school I went to.”
InsideTheVille.com is reporting that Hialeah offensive lineman Chris Acosta verbally committed to Louisville on Tuesday. Acosta took an official visit to FAU this past weekend.
Scout.com reported that Glades Central cornerback Travis Bell will follow "Doc" Holliday from West Virginia to Marshall, where he is now the head coach. Bell visited FAU as part of the Owls first big recruiting weekend.
