BOCA RATON – The Florida Atlantic women’s basketball took the right steps to slow down UALR’s dangerous guard Chastity Reed.
Unfortunately for the Owls, other players stepped up their game in the second half when Reed struggled and the Trojans defeated FAU 68-54 on Saturday at FAU Arena.
After Reed scored 15 points in the first half, the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year was held to four points after halftime.
“I thought Teri (Stamps) did a good job on her, everybody else – they just couldn’t guard her,” said FAU coach Chancellor Dugan. “Teri did a good job on her and didn’t let her catch what she wanted to catch.”
But that’s when Hannah Fone put in 10 points after not taking a shot in the first half.
It was the third consecutive loss for the Owls, who took a 2-0 lead and trailed UALR (12-5, 6-0) the rest of the way.
FAU (4-13, 1-5) trailed by as many as 11 in the first half and was only down 41-34 with 15 minutes remaining.
However, a 10-0 run sealed the game for the Trojans, who have won 10 consecutive games.
“They were missing shots and not capitalizing on what we were doing,” said FAU coach Chancellor Dugan. “We can’t score and we have to get better and work on it in practice. We’ve got to go harder in practice to simulate what we get in a game.”
