FAU coach Carl Pelini has said he wants to add a few more cornerbacks to help combat the spread offenses the Owls face week after week in Sun Belt conference play.
On Tuesday, FAU received a commitment from a 6-foot-2 cornerback who runs a 4.5 40 and can match-up one-on-one with big receivers.
Jacksonville-Raines corner Charles Henry enjoyed his home visit with FAU coaches Jeff Sims and Kerry Dixon enough that he committed to play for the Owls.
“That helped me a lot, them coming to my house,” Henry said. “I'm committed.”
Henry recorded 32 tackles, intercepted three passes and broke up seven more as a senior.
He visited the campus this past weekend and nearly committed then. Henry said he enjoyed walking the campus and seeing the facilities.
“I got to put on my jersey - that had to be the best,” Henry said.
Henry is the second Raines player in the span of a week to decide to play for the Owls. Isaiah Stallings, a wide receiver who graduated in 2010 and expected to grayshirt at Illinois only to have his offer pulled, will walk on at FAU in the summer.
Henry is still planning to visit Alabama St. this final weekend before Signing Day. He had scheduled a visit with the Hornets for last weekend, but pushed that visit back when FAU came calling.
Even though his verbal commitment is non-binding, Henry doesn't see the visit to Alabama St. affecting his decision to play at FAU.
“You never know what could happen, but nothing really could change it,” Henry said.
