North Broward Prep quarterback Brandon Doughty may not be headed to Boca Raton after all.
The Miami Herald is reporting that the 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback changed his mind and is going to sign with Western Kentucky.
"This is a chance of a lifetime for me," Doughty told The Herald. "New coaching staff, an opportunity to compete for playing time as a freshman and a school that was certainly a great fit for my future."
Calls to Doughty and his family by FAUOwlAccess.com were not immediately returned.
Verbal commitments – to FAU or any other school – are non-binding. Players aren’t bound to a school until they sign a National Letter of Intent. The first day to that can happen is Feb 3.
Doughty threw for nearly 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns during his senior season at North Broward Prep. Mississippi State and Colorado State had pursued Doughty, as had Sun Belt Conference rival Florida International.
Prior to pledging to attend FAU, Doughty cancelled a recruiting trip to Western Kentucky. Doughty’s mother, Angie Doughty, said at the time that her son wasn’t too fond of the Hilltopper’s offensive style, adding that the fact that WKU was bringing in so many quarterback prospects didn’t appeal to him.
Western Kentucky lost all 12 games last season, including a 29-23 contest to the Owls at Lockhart Stadium. The Hilltoppers fired head coach David Elson late in the season, replacing him with Willie Taggart.
Doughty is one of two quarterbacks verbally committed to FAU. Sumter (S.C.) signal caller Stephen Curtis also said he will sign with the Owls.
