Fort Scott Community College tight end Terrell Mitchell, a former Kentucky commit, says he will be playing his football at FAU next season.
Mitchell visited FAU this past weekend, committing to FAU coaches on Sunday. That's not something he thought he would do before getting on the plane to South Florida.
“I talked to the coaches and I was considering it, but then I was shown the atmosphere – everything was brand with the new coaching staff. I knew I wanted to be part of the new regime.”
A 6-foot-6, 250-pound tight end, Mitchell never played a down at Fort Scott. He enrolled too late for the season in his first year, then tore his ACL during the following spring.
“The knee is doing good,” Mitchell said. “I'm about 85 percent. I'll be ready when the season starts.”
FAU recruiting coordinator Jeff Sims was Mitchell's coach for that first year at Fort Scott. Mitchell said his relationship with Sims played a significant role in his decision.
“Since he was my head coach I already was real comfortable playing for him,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell committed to Kentucky out of McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Ga.,where he caught 11 touchdowns as a senior.
He said the Wildcats were showing renewed interest in him, and Oklahoma and Nebraska made inquiries.
Mitchell is a prototypical tight end, but he said FAU's move to the spread should employ him in different roles.
“I'm going to flex out a lot,” Mitchell said. “I'm going to play a lot of slot.”
