FAU’s football stadium project will receive $1 million from student funds for construction of the proposed on-campus football stadium.
It will be the largest gift for the stadium project, which is still waiting for final approval by the FAU Board of Trustees and the Florida Board of Governors.
The SGA decided to allocate $ 1 million in Capital Improvement Trust Funds (CITF) to the stadium to show their support for the project.
“Athletics increases the pride in the university,” student body president Ayden Maher said. “I think as Student Government continues to support athletics we’ll see more things like this in the future. ...Funding programs like this will help build tradition and the stadium is the next key piece for our university.”
CITF money comes from student fees and allowed to be used for debt service or to pay for approved projects.
FAU Athletic Director Craig Angelos hopes the gift is the first of many large donations for the proposed stadium
“It’s great that the first million dollar gift is from the students themselves,” Angelos said. “It shows students really want this stadium.”
The gift was spearheaded by outgoing FAU student body President Tiffany Weimar and Angelos is happy the students wanted to be involved.
"The students are what the university is all about,” Angelos said. “We wouldn’t have an athletic program without them so we wanted them to be significant partners”.
FAU’s Board of Trustees will be asked to approve the $74 million stadium project on Wednesday. If approved the Florida Board of Governors can approve the project in June, allowing construction to begin.
The stadium is scheduled to open in 2011.
