BOCA RATON – Florida Atlantic was hoping it would catch a break with Louisiana-Lafayette’s leading scorer, Mercedes Johnson, struggling with an illness.
Unfortunately for the Owls, Ragin’ Cajuns senior guard Jasmine Barnes picked up the scoring load as ULL defeated FAU 85-78 on Saturday at FAU Arena.
Barnes scored 29 points, the most points scored against FAU this season, on 10-of-11 shooting from the field.
“(Barnes) is a great player and she’s always played real well against us,” said Owls coach Chancellor Dugan. “It’s pretty easy to shoot the ball if you’re not being guarded.”
It was FAU’s third consecutive loss.
Johnson, who leads ULL with 15.2 points per game, missed the Ragin’ Cajuns 72-52 loss at FIU on Wednesday and didn’t play in the first half vs. the Owls, scoring just seven points.
FAU (6-18, 3-10) led 35-30 at halftime, but an 11-2 run by the Ragin’ Cajuns (11-14, 4-8) put them in control of the game.
“They just came out and made some shots,” Dugan said. “We were trading baskets with them and we just couldn’t get stops.”
The Owls cut the margin to 82-78 with under a minute to play, but it wasn’t enough to catch ULL.
