FAU announced Monday that Dick Hopkins will be the defensive backs coach, filling the final vacancy on the Owls coaching staff.

Hopkins has been a defensive coordinator at both the I-A and I-AA levels and brings 36 years of coaching experience.

Most recently, Hopkins was the defensive coordinator at Duquesne. Hopkins also was the defensive coordinator for Vanderbilt (1986-88), Rice (1984-85), Cincinnati (1983) and Duke (1981-82).

“I’m delighted to have Dick join our staff,” FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger said. “He brings years and years of experience to our program and will fit into the staff quite well.”

Before coaching one season at Duquesne, Hopkins was the defensive coordinator at Chattanooga (2008), Rhode Island (2006-07), The Citadel (2004-05), James Madison (1999-2003) and Yale (1993).

Hopkins has roots in the Palm Beach County area, having coached at  Twin Lakes and Forest Hill High Schools in 1970s.

Hopkins replaces former defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator Kirk Hoza, who was dismissed following the 2009 season.
