GAINESVILLE – Florida Atlantic was riding high after staving off elimination with a 11-7 victory vs. Oregon State on Sunday afternoon.
A few hours later the Owls couldn’t have felt much lower after they were not only eliminated from the NCAA Regionals, but were pounded from start to finish by the Gators 15-0 at McKethan Stadium.
“The team we played tonight was a really good baseball team,” said FAU coach John McCormack. “We just could not get on track.”
The Owls (37-24) began the day with an offensive onslaught vs. the Beavers that included a 3-homer performance by Eddie Cassisdy.
But against Florida starting pitcher Brian Johnson, the Owls struggled.
“That first win was big, but I was hoping to have a little bit better outcome in the second one,” said Cassidy, who was 2-for-3 in the second game and was the only FAU player with more than one hit for the Gators.
The No. 4 Gators benefitted from three homers by No. 8 hitter Tyler Thompson, who had two homers entering the game.
FAU starter Taylor Everist didn’t make it out of the third inning after, allowing six runs and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings to the Gators, the top seed in the Regional.
“We needed to pitch better early in the game,” McCormack said. “And we needed to put some runs on the board and put them on the defensive.”
The loss, the worst of the year for the Owls, brought FAU’s season to an end, but the Owls will have the bulk of the team returning next season.
“Overall I thought we had a good season,” McCormack said. “I was hoping for a better outcome tonight so we could get to tomorrow where anything can happen in those do-or-die situations, but it just wasn’t meant to be.”
With the victory Florida (45-15) advances to next week's Super Regionals
