Different pitcher, same result.
FAU made a switch in its pitching rotation for Friday’s game against Louisiana-Lafayette, but it didn’t make a difference as the Owls lost another Friday night game, this time 9-3 in Lafayette, La.
Junior pitcher Taylor Everist had started on Friday nights this season, but the Owls were just 1-4 in those games, prompting Owls coach John McCormack to make a change in the rotation and start sophomore Ryan Garton for the historic 1,000th game at “Tigue”Moore Field.
But Garton didn’t fare much better than Everist.
After hitting the first two batters of the game and throwing a wild pitch, Garton (2-1) gave up an RBI double to Jordan Poirrier before recording an out en route to the easy victory.
ULL's Zach Osborne went the distance, striking out seven,
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for FAU.
“We will come back fighting tomorrow, it’s only game one of the series and we have two more opportunities,” McCormack said.
“He was good tonight,” McCormack said. “We got him into some jams but we just couldn’t capitalize.”
The Ragin’ Cajuns led 4-0 after three innings before the Owls (12-8, 4-3 Sun Belt Conference) showed some life by scoring two runs when Nick DelGuidice, Edddie Cassidy and Mike Albaladejo hit consecutive doubles.
But a base-running blunder ended the Owls' threat. Centerfielder Anthony Mesa reached on an infield hit, but Albaladejo, thinking Mesa was out, rounded third and began walking to the dugout and was easily tagged out.
Garton left the game in thebottom of the fourth. He allowed six earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Hugh Adams finished the game and held the Ragin’ Cajuns to three hits the rest of the way, but the lead ballooned to 8-2 after six.
