Wait is rewarded
FAU fullback David Muniz missed last season for academic reasons, but kept practicing because he knew he could come back as a senior. The hard work paid off as Muniz is taking snaps with the starters and just earned a scholarship.

BOCA RATON – It wasn’t easy for Florida Atlantic fullback David Muniz to report to the practice field every day to practice on the scout team last season.
Muniz wasn’t cleared to play last season because of academics, but he not only knew he could get his grades in order, he knew he could play. So every day Muniz worked hard in the classroom but also on the practice field with no guarantee he would make it back on the field in 2010.
“It was tough to know I was coming out and doing scout teams and there was no way I would see the field, but I knew I couldn’t give up,” Muniz said.
The hard work is paying off.
Muniz, a senior, was cleared to play earlier this month and is running with the first team in his quest to be the Owls' starting fullback when FAU faces UAB on Thursday in the opening game of the season.
“Just to get out here and to battle for playing time feels good,” Muniz said. “That’s what I’ve been trying to do for four years and it’s paying off. I’ve been working on my blocking and learning the plays so there is no doubt.”
Muniz was also rewarded by earning a scholarship this season.
“It was a big relief, not only financially, but just to get the recognition,” Muniz said.
FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger said he likes what he has seen from Muniz.
“He’s doing quite well,” Schnellenberger said. “He’s been here a long time training. He’s almost like an astronaut - now he’s ready for his first voyage and first mission. He’s a very consistent player and we’re glad to have him.”
Nick of time: Left tackle Sam McCroy didn’t practice Saturday and linebacker Michael Lockley was in shorts.
When asked about the injuries, Schnellenberger said they were “nicks” and didn’t rule anyone out for the UAB game.
Also, wide receiver DeAndre Richardson spent most of the practice with his leg wrapped in ice because of a “shin bruise” Schnellenberger said.
Quick Hooters: The Owls are scheduled to practice on Sunday at 3 p.m. … Wide receiver Avery Holley was back at practice Saturday after missing Friday’s workout.
Practice report: What we saw at Saturday’s practice
Making plays: It’s becoming easier to see who is with the travelling squad and who is on the scout team in the last few practices. True freshman WR Marcus Cunnigham seems embedded with the second team and looks to be destined to play sometime this season.
Stepping up: After making progress Friday, C Jimmie Colley didn’t see much action Saturday, so Chris Newbold was back at center and at this point probably has the edge to start at UAB if Colley doesn’t return to practice soon.
Instant message: “I am concerned about the ones who have been here for every practice and every snap. For that reason I will keep that in my mind as I prepare for the balance of the time we have to get ready.”
