BOCA RATON – Florida Atlantic finished its final pre-season scrimmage around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, about 21 hours after it started.
The full scrimmage was originally slated to be held on Saturday, but a thunderstorm halted action about mid-way through.
The Owls re-took the field at 11 a.m. Sunday, completing the non-contact scrimmage.
“This was good today,” FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger said. “It was hot out here, it was sticky and they had to push pretty hard, but they got a lot accomplished.”
FAU ran about 60 plays on Sunday, playing on the area between the two practices fields to avoid damaging the regular fields which were still damp from Saturday’s storm.
The Owls’ offensive and defensive starters worked against scout teams that were running formations and schemes FAU expects to face when it takes the field against Nebraska in the Sept. 5 season opener.
“Training camp is officially closed now and we are on our countdown to kickoff,” Schnellenberger said.
FAU players have Monday off. They will return to the practice fields on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before traveling to Lincoln, Neb. on Friday.

Quick reload: The Owls completed their final pre-season scrimmage on Sunday. The non-contact game simulation began on Saturday but was disrupted by rain and lightning. FAU returns to the practice fields behind the Oxley Center on Tuesday. All practices are open to the public.
Owl-star performance: Tavious Polo got the defense going early when he picked off a David Kooi pass on the offense’s first series.
Chart watch: Reserve running back Avionne Rolle is showing no ill effects from the groin injury which caused him to miss almost two weeks. He is running with the second team and looks to be a lock to return kickoffs.
Instant message: “They’ve got a half hour sports program down there on Channel 4 each Saturday. Bokamper is the host. I’m going to try to get down there for a bit more of that.”
