> Video practice report: Coach explains Gent decision
BOCA RATON – Two games after being suspended for conduct detrimental to the team, wide receiver Cortez Gent has been reinstated and will play Saturday against Wyoming.
“I am suspending his suspension,” Schnellenberger said after practice Tuesday. “I think the penalty I imposed on him was consummate for the problem he had. …I hope he doesn’t have any more problems. He’s kind of on a probation. I think he paid the right price for his indiscretion.”
Gent missed the Owls’ loss at South Carolina and Saturday’s loss vs. Louisiana-Monroe because of the suspension.
“It’s not the same over there on the scout team, but they still run and catch and he was in on individual periods,” Schnellenberger said. “He should be good to go by Saturday.”
Since the suspension, Gent had been practicing with the scout team. Schnellenberger said Gent will not start on Saturday vs. the Cowboys. Lester Jean and Chris Bonner will remain the starting wide outs.
“He’ll be in the rotation like everybody else,” Schnellenberger said,
The all-time leader in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in FAU history, Gent caught five passes for 58 yards in the Owls’ loss at Nebraska. His last catch against the Cornhuskers gave Gent 136 receptions, tying him with Anthony Crissinger-Hill the most in school history.
“He was exemplary in all his dealings with the team and the way he handled this situation was first-class,” Schnellenberger said.
PracticeBrowser: A look at Tuesday’s practice
Making plays: DB Darian Thomas was in on plenty of tackles as the nickel back Tuesday as the Owls prepare for Wyoming's spread attack.
Stepping up: WR Cortez Gent was back practicing with the offense after practicing with the scout team since being suspended from the team two weeks ago.
Instant message: “The offense was fairly sharp. It’s good to see that on Tuesday. If we can take this through Thursday and Friday, then we’ll have a good shot.”
- FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger
Worth A Re-Tweet: “It's not official until Howard says it, but a scout teamer just asked Gent if he was back and he nodded 'yes.'
