BOCA RATON - The two players who verbally committed to Florida Atlantic, Jupiter center Grant Pelchen and Gill St. Bernard's (NJ) guard Chris Jenkins, have signed their paperwork and will officially join the Owls basketball program during the early signing period.
Pelchen signed his National Letter of Intent and it was received Thursday morning by Owls coach Mike Jarvis.
Jenkins signed his NLI on Wednesday, the first day players could officially sign with their new schools and sent it in on Thursday afternoon.
"He's a world-class shooter," Jarvis said. "He's going to be the best shooter we've ever had here. He's a pure shooter with ridiculous range.”
Jarvis is excited to land the 6-foot-9 Pelchen, who will complement junior center Dragan Sekelja, who is playing this season and Justin Raffington, who will be a junior next season after sitting this year out after transferring from San Francisco.
“You have to figure he's going to be our third big guy with Justin and Dragan so we should be really deep with big guys,” Jarvis said. “He's got great instincts, can pass and can shoot.”
Stetson and Jacksonville also had offered Pelchen, who scored 8.3 points per game last season, but is a talented defensive player averaging 7.1 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game.
The signings of Jenkins and Pelchen essentially brings FAU's recruiting for 2013 to an end. The Owls still have a scholarship they could offer, but are expected to possibly hold it in case a player wants to transfer into the program at the end of this season.
