Egad. Elon?

Owls blow double-digit second half lead in loss to Southern Conference foe.

Florida Atlantic doesn't seem to like playing  with a lead.

A day after the Owls nearly squandered a 25-point lead to Coppin St., FAU (1-3) couldn't hang on to a double-digit lead in a 62-59 overtime loss to Elon at the Maui Invitational Mainland.

The Owls led Elon (3-1) 39-27 with 13 minutes remaining but went the next 6-plus minutes without scoring.

After the Phoenix tied the contest at 39, FAU's offense became the Greg Gantt and Stephan Moody show. The duo scored 17 of the Owls final 18 points in the final minutes of the second half and overtime.

Moody led all scorers with 22 points. Gantt, whose jumper with 1:47 remaining proved to be the final points of regulation, finished with 11.

Playing only his fourth game as an Owl, Moody's free throw midway through the overtime gave the Owls their lone lead of the overtime. Trailing 60-59, Moody had a chance to give the Owls the lead in the closing seconds but was called for a travel.

FAU had one desperation chance to send the game to a second overtime but couldn't manage a shot in the final seconds.

The Owls opened their double-digit lead with an 11-0 run that began with the score tied at 18 with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Moody started the run with an old-fashioned three-point play and concluded it with a driving lay-up. He also added a long-range three-pointer in the middle of the run.
