BOCA RATON - Florida Atlantic announced Thursday it has accepted an invitation to join Conference USA and will be leaving the Sun Belt Conference after the 2013-14 academic year.

“This a wonderful opportunity for our student-athletes, our entire student body, our coaches, our fans and the whole community, ” said FAU President Mary Jane Saunders at a morning press conference.

The move to Conference USA is expected to benefit the Owls' athletic programs - especially football, due to the league's television deals and bowl agreements.

“It is a momenetous day,” FAU Athletic Director Pat Chun. “We're excited because this does bring some stability for us with the finances of the deal.”

Middle Tennessee also announced it was leaving the Sun Belt Conference to join Conference USA on Thursday.
