BOCA RATON – Freshman guard Jackson Trapp wasn't a big part of the plan for Florida Atlantic coach Mike Jarvis before the season started.
Now Trapp is in charge of implementing the Owls' gameplan each and every night.
Trapp has taken over the starting point guard position, replacing freshman Stefan Moody, who struggled in the first two games.
As the 6-foot-4, Trapp adjusts into his unexpected role, he is dishing out 4.3 assists per game since assuming the starting role in the third game of the season. He also has 14 turnovers, but is showing some improvement in games like FAU's victory vs. American on Saturday when he had six assists and no turnovers.
“The main thing for me is just to eliminate turnovers, because that's the main thing coach wanted, and just control the offense,” Trapp said. “It's working out so far.”
But the most amazing statistic for Trapp is the number of games he has started. Trapp was expected to be low in the rotation this season.
“He was going to be a back up wing,” Jarvis said. “I figured he might be a point guard by his junior year. I guess that came early.”
But Trapp was impressive in practice, giving Jarvis the confidence to put him in the lineup.
“He has a really good understanding of the game,” Jarvis said. “He's not in a hurry and he's done a good job.”
