A strong second-half effort by Georgia erased a FAU lead at halftime allowing the Bulldogs to rally to defeat the Owls 77-60 in Athens, Ga. on Wednesday.
“Until we start believing we can beat these teams, we’re not going to,” FAU coach Mike Jarvis said on his post-game radio show on ESPN 760. “The staff believes and a couple of guys believe, but as a team, we don’t believe yet and that’s something you have to work on. If you believe it, you have a chance to achieve it. Until that happens, there will be a few more nights like this.”
FAU had a 9-point lead in the first half and led 30-29 at halftime, but Georgia’s Trey Thompkins scored 25 of his game-high 35 points in the second half as the Bulldogs opened a 64-44 lead late in the second half.
“You have to go out and play like you believe you can stop him,” Jarvis said. “If you go out and he looks you in the eye and it looks like you are a afraid of him, guess what? He’s going to score against you.”
The Owls (5-6) weren’t finished and scored baskets on five consecutive possessions – including two 3-pointers by Shavar Richardson and one by Ray Taylor to cut the lead to 66-58 with three minutes remaining.
However, the Bulldogs outscored the Owls 11-2 in the final minutes to pull away.
Taylor and Richardson each had 12 to lead FAU.
