For Florida Atlantic coach Mike Jarvis, the script is getting all too familiar.
On Sunday he again watched his young Owls play well in spurts against a team from a basketball power conference – this time Maryland – only to see lapses in execution and concentration doom FAU.
The Owls and Terrapins swapped leads in the opening six minutes before an 11-0 run gave Maryland a comfortable margin it wouldn’t relinquish en route to a 72-59 victory.
“Some of these guys have to finally realize that they are on their own,” Jarvis said. “Mommy is not going to come and take care of them. They’ve got to grow up and start to become men.”
FAU (5-7) trailed 39-27 at halftime and only cut the lead to single digits momentarily at 64-54 on a Ray Taylor 3-pointer with 6:53 remaining. Maryland (8-3) reeled off the next nine points to put the game away.
Taylor once again led the Owls in scoring with 16 points, most of them coming in the first 25 minutes. The freshman point guard injured his shoulder in a collision and had to leave the game with 14:17 to play.
He returned a couple minutes later but that 3-pointer which brought the Owls within nine points was his lone hoop the rest of the way.
Brett Royster grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds.
Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez led all scorers with 26 points.
