A few items concerning the athletic department are on the agenda for Wednesday's meeting of the FAU Board of Trustees Audit and Finance Committee, but it's not the thing Owl football fans want the trustees to address the most.

The trustees aren't expected to discuss the Innovation Village project this time around, but there is a good reason. This meeting is to review FAU's budget for 2009-10. I can't believe I am going to say this, but with FAU under such a financial crunch, the budget issue is bigger than the stadium right now. It would be poor form to be discussing how the university will pay for a stadium while approving a budget that cuts jobs and programs - and possibly submarines.

The athletic department will ask for an increase in the athletic fee from $13.75 per credit hour to $14.30 per credit hour. This is a modest increase and I'm sure not everyone will be happy with the prospect of supporting athletics if they aren't a follower of sports. However, this is the price for developing a growing athletic department and FAU's fees will still be below what FIU charges (currently $14.51 per hour plus a $10 flat fee).

The other item of interest is found in FAU's 2009-10 budget. The athletic department's budget is slightly less than last year's, but not by much. FAU's budget of 12,698,375 is 2.4 percent less than the 2008-09 budget of 13,015,661. Again, for comparison, FIU had to cut more than $1 million from its athletic budget - of course that's from a whopping $22 million budget. It looks like FAU didn't have to cut as much because they already run a pretty lean operation - and should be commended for that.
