FAU administrators are currently considering the feasibility of about $1.5 million worth of renovations to the baseball stadium.

Construction, which could begin as early as July, would take place in three phases.

The drawings on the right are preliminary. The administration has commissioned more detailed designs.

For fans, the most important part of Phase I will be on-site bathrooms located on the third base side of the park. Currently, fans wishing to use the restrooms have to go to the pool area – “for your convenience.”

The first phase would also spruce up the look of the stadium, adding pavers and columns that would give the ballpark a look that is consistent with the recently renovated Burrow.

It will also convert the area under the existing bleaches from storage to a covered walkway that houses concession and merchandise stands. A new gate and ticket booth will allow FAU to better control foot traffic into the stadium.

Phase II will add a second set of public restrooms, this time on the first base side of the ballpark, and expand the grandstands down both lines. They will also expand and cover the batting cages beyond the rightfield wall.

Phase III, which is being referred to by at least one administrator as “the dream phase,” would add a clubhouse beyond the Owls’ first base dugout, cutting into the berm on that side of the park. There could also be a party deck or some sort of VIP seating.

The berm on the third base side will not be affected. There is no plan to add a berm beyond the outfield walls.

“I’m hoping after the season is over we can do something to dress it up over the summer time, whether it’s one or two or three phases,” FAU Athletic Director Craig Angelos said.

It’s possible – in fact somewhat likely – that Phases I and II could be constructed simultaneously. If that happens Phase III could wait a year or longer.

FAU is pursuing various means of funding the improvements. Best case scenario entails having a donor provide the money, but there are a couple other scenarios.

Angelos said money secured for the baseball improvements would not come from the fund for the football stadium.
 
He put the likeliness that construction for the improvements would begin in July at “50 percent.”
