Mike Gipson’s and Kevin Alexander’s outstanding weekend starts presented FAU coach John McCormack with a problem he won’t mind having for the remainder of the year.

The Saturday and Sunday complete games kept a few pitchers who could have used a little work on the bench.

McCormack’s starting to get accustomed to such an outing from Gipson (right), who has limited opponents to a total of seven earned runs in his five outings this year.

Alexander’s start was more of a pleasant surprise. The freshman had struggled since making his tremendous debut against Cincinnati during opening weekend.

Following Sunday’s game, McCormack said he was really only hoping for three good innings out of Alexander.

“We really wanted to get Barry (Rooks) into the game and Andy Mee hasn’t thrown in a week, but when you get the complete games I think you’ve got to take them – give the bullpen some time off because there will be days when we really need those guys,” McCormack said.

Rooks and Mee will likely get at least an inning on Tuesday against Cornell. Taylor Everist will get the start and throw a couple innings in an effort to fix the mechanical issues that have rendered him ineffective over his last two Friday starts.

McCormack also wanted to get Ryan Bernal some work on Sunday, so don’t be surprised if the senior righthander gets an inning or two.

Flashing leather: One reason why Gipson, Alexander and the rest of the hurlers are having success is that the people behind them are making plays. FAU’s 17 errors tie the Owls with Arkansas-Little Rock for the fewest miscues in the conference.

FAU pitchers have allowed only 11 unearned runs this season. Only Troy pitchers can claim fewer.
