When FAU coach John McCormack was thinking about which player was going to participate in Tuesday’s Sun Belt Conference Home Run Derby at Reese Smith Jr. Field in Murfreesboro, Tenn. it’s unlikely catcher Mike Albaladejo was high on his list.
In fact he was probably last. No FAU regular had fewer homers than Albaladejo, who had a grand total of one in his career before Tuesday’s game.
But maybe McCormack should include his new power hitter in the next derby after Albaladejo hit his 3-run walk-off homer in the 13th inning to rally FAU to a 9-8 victory over Western Kentucky in the Sun Belt Tournament.
Albaladejo’s shot may have been unexpected to most, but not every one.
FAU pitcher Mike Gipson must be psychic, because he had this to stay on Sunday when asked about the home run derby:
“The ball flies,” said Gipson, who will start vs. South Alabama on Thursday. “Alby hit a home run in BP. That’s how far the ball flies.”
