BOCA GRATTON - FAU third baseman Sean Bukovich figures he knows why teammate Colby Gratton has been so hot lately.

“He finally switched to a big boy bat and he’s been hitting,” Bukovich joked following Gratton’s walk-off home run against FIU last night. “It’s about time. I taught him good.”

There is plenty of truth in Bukovich’s ribbing,

Gratton’s early-season struggles at the plate prompted the leftfielder to switch from a 34-inch bat to a lighter 33-incher. The switch provided an initial boost, but Gratton’s at-bats over the last few weeks didn’t feel right.

“I swung a 34 last year and hit .340 – that’s not the problem,” Gratton said. “I’m not weak. A 34 is not that much heavier.”

Gratton actually made the switch back to a 34 for Thursday’s game and promptly hit two home runs.

“In BP it’s been awesome – so much more barrel,” he said.

Gratton and the rest of the Owls will try to win their first Sun Belt Conference regular season baseball title today. A victory over FIU and the championship is theirs. A loss by Louisiana-Lafayette later in the day would also put FAU on top.
