Like Moore, linebacker Walding returns to FAU

At one point during the spring FAU looked like it might run out of linebackers. With two players having left the spring before the start of workouts and a few others hurt, walk-on Cory Davis and suddenly appeared on the two deep.
Now the FAU corps runneth over.
Last week we told you that Toney Moore had decided to rejoin the team. It turns out that Tony Walding will be back with the Owls when camp opens, too.
Both of the prodigal linebackers had decided to transfer during the spring, but changed their minds during the summer.
Walding came to FAU as a freshman in the spring of 2008 and after a red-shirt year had worked his way onto the two-deep at one point as a red-shirt freshman in 2009’s pre-season practices.
After not playing in any games last season, Walding chose to transfer before spring practice.
“He has tools,” FAU defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Kurt Van Valkenburgh said. “He has a lot of learning to do.”
Neither Walding nor Moore will begin the fall on the two-deep roster, but Van Valkenburgh said he wouldn’t be shocked if either or both found their way into that position at some point this year.
And while neither Moore nor Walding has played a down of college football, five of the six players ahead of them have. (Randell Johnson is the only one who hasn’t, and he could be the most athletic of them all.)
Right now, none of the top six have anything more than nagging injuries, which means the Owls could potentially have eight linebackers vying for serious playing time when camp opens on August 7.
Suddenly, depth at linebacker doesn’t appear to be a concern.
