Thursday’s FAU Daily Briefing: Report from last 7-on-7 workout

Florida Atlantic held its last off-season 7-on-7 workout on Wednesday and the next stop is pre-season training camp and the first practice on Aug. 7.

Will the Owls’ be ready? I don’t know, but the off-season workouts should have helped. There were plenty of players, including true freshman, who were participating to get ready for the season.
The players who had the most to gain were freshman quarterbacks Nick Bracewell and Stephen Curtis. With their work during the last few weeks, when they take snaps next week, it won’t   be the first time they’ve worked with their receivers.
Senior quarterback Jeff Van Camp remembered when he arrived to campus and didn’t have the benefit of going through off-season workouts.
“They are getting great experience,” said Van Camp, the de facto coach of the 7-on-7s. “When I was a freshman I was just thrown into the fire.”
No position battles were contested and no starting jobs were won in the off-season workouts, but it certainly gives a sense of who will have an early advantage in training camp.
Here’s a few observations from the last day of 7-on-7s.
  • I’d say it was fitting that the session ended with an interception of Van Camp by defensive back Marcus Bartels. Bartels will be out to prove that last year wasn't a fluke. He got a foot in the door and then knocked it down to become the Sun Belt’s second leading tackler with 111.
  • Quarterback David Kooi didn’t throw the last few workouts after he tweaked his shoulder AC joint.  “I just warmed up to see how it felt and it’s feeling good,” Kooi said Wednesday. “ I just want to rest it so that it’s a full 100 percent.” Kooi said he will be ready for camp.
  • Speaking of defensive backs, could Brentley Harstad be on the brink of something big? Remember, he led the Owls in interceptions last season (OK, it was just two picks) but showed his knack for the ball again with an interception and I predict will make a move during training camp.
