Thursday's FAU Daily Briefing: What exactly are they doing at these voluntary workouts?

I’ve been asked a couple times recently what kinds of drills the players are doing at their voluntary workouts. 
So far the format has been pretty standard. After warming up, running backs, tight ends and wide receivers work on routes with the quarterbacks. Cornerback Tavious Polo had a little fun with this part on Wednesday. That photo doesn’t show Polo making a pick. It’s him catching a deep ball. He's still lobbying coaches to let him play both ways.
Following the route-running, they turn to a full 7-on-7, starting each play from near midfield. The real meat of the workout comes in the final 20-to-30 when the offense tries to drive the field, picking up first downs and ultimately touchdowns.
Jeff Van Camp leads the offense on the first drive, then David Kooi and Graham Wilbert get their drives. Kooi, incidentally, was the only one of the three who didn’t throw a pick during the drive portion on Wednesday.
Yes, some offensive and defensive linemen are out there, but they mostly keep themselves segregated at the end of the field working on quickness and agility drills.
The whole workout only lasts about an hour and a half. After the past couple workouts players have stayed late to work on special teams stuff – fielding punts, etc. It’s informal – NCAA rules prohibit coaches from being out there – which allows you to see a different level of interaction among players.
The workouts are on Mondays and Wednesdays, and will continue until the start of fall pre-season practices in early August.
