Friday’s Daily Briefing: FAU Stadium shines bright
By Marcus Nelson
FAU quarterback Graham Wilbert’s first audible was overruled by Owls coach Howard Schnellenberger.
Wilbert approached Schnellenberger a few minutes before the switch was to be thrown to turn on the lights at night for the first time at the new football stadium with an idea.
“I told him it would be cool if he stood out on the field and said ‘let there be light’ right as the lights came on, but he didn’t want to do it,” Wilbert said.
That was a good idea by Wilbert, but he may not have known the lights don’t all come on at once.
Instead Schnellenberger threw the switch with FAU President Mary Jane Saunders that turned on the lights at FAU Stadium for the first time and bathed the stadium in 50 percent light instantly gradually working up to 100 percent.
And when the lights came on at full strength it was a sight to behold. There have been many stadium tours and our Chuck King has basically been living at the stadium since we began our “Football in Paradise” series. But with the lights on, the grass in and a big ‘FAU’ logo in the seats, it’s hard not get excited for Oct. 15.
