Tuesday's Required Reading: McGee gaining momentum as deadline nears

Florida Atlantic is less than a week from its goal of having a new football coach, but doesn't have its man just yet.

In the last few days Athletic Director Craig Angelos has been in communication with many of the candidates telling them to sit tight while the process plays out.

We are also hearing from our sources that FAU is having serious talks with Arkansas offensive coordinator Garrick McGee, who we reported last week had interviewed for the position, and he possibly could have an offer to be the next coach already in hand.

While it seems the coaching search is into high gear, maybe FAU should slow down on this search with so many jobs opening up the last few days, perhaps opening up whole new pool of applicants.

For instance, maybe Angelos should at least talk to former Florida and Illinois coach Ron Zook, whose mother lives in Lake Worth, and former UM coach Dennis Erickson to see if they would be the right fit. While neither would be guaranteed success, either could fit what Angelos is looking for.

It might no look so great to take a little extra time after a senior athletic department officials guaranteed FAU would announce a coach by Dec. 5, this is simply too important of a hire to be rushed by a self-imposed deadline.
