Owls struggle with Gantt, Taylor slumping
By Marcus Nelson
The word has been out among other coaches in the Sun Belt that Florida Atlantic’s weakness is its big men.
In some games, the Owls have been able to counter by trying to get more out of their guards – and why not?
Ray Taylor and Greg Gantt are streaky shooters who can catch fire easily. Throw in the savvy play of seniors Shavar Richardson and Alex Tucker, and the Owls could compete with most teams in the Sun Belt.
However, Gantt and Taylor (who had 10 points on 10-of-24 shooting in an ugly loss to MTSU) are slumping down the stretch and are showing no signs of improving with the Sun Belt Conference Tournament looming in three games.
A week ago I thought getting Kore White to play better was the key to the Owls showing some improvement. Now that onus has shifted to Taylor and Gantt.
There’s no reason to explain the recent troubles of Taylor and Gantt, but if they can’t get going, the stay at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament is going to be a brief one again.
