Victory over Alabama could mean big things for 2012 baseball season
By Marcus Nelson
With so many games, it’s best not to get too excited or depressed about the result of a single baseball game.
However, FAU’s 5-2 victory over Alabama in the 2012 season-opener on Friday is a wecome sign for FAU fans.
After all, the football and basketball teams each lost their opening game and were previews of future struggles. After the last few months, Owl Nation could use something to cheer about.
And the victory over the Crimson Tide is significant in many ways. Anytime a Sun Belt team beats an SEC team it is important and for FAU pitcher Ryan Garton to start the season on such a high note, could bode well for the rest of his Friday night starts when Sun Belt play begins.
But how about coach John McCormack picking up his 100th career victory in the first game of his fourth season? Keep in mind that McCormack, then an assistant coach, is the only staff member currently part of the team who was also in Tuscaloosa, Ala. In 2002 when FAU defeated Alabama to advance to the Super Regionals – still the only time an FAU team in any sport has advanced out of a regional in NCAA post-season play.
McCormack must have felt good, not because of his two-game winning streak against the Tide, but because this season indeed has some promise to possibly be in a position to capture some more magic in the regionals come June.
