Wild weekend on tap at FAU
By Marcus Nelson
It's going to be a wild weekend at Florida Atlantic with four baseball games, two basketball games, a softball tournament and a Hall of Fame induction.
I'm guessing there won't be much sleep for atheltic department staffers until Monday.
Let's start with Friday when the baseball team plays its home opener at 6:30 p.m. against Manhattan.
I would hope there would be a large enthusiastic crowd for the game to welcome the team home after its sweep over Alabama last weekend.
Unfortunately, the school decided to schedule its Hall of Fame induction at 6 p.m. and since baseball coach Kevin Cooney will be inducted, it forces baseball fans to choose between honoring the long-time coach and supporting this year's team. Not very good planning. Also, women's basketball player Shontavia Williams will also be inducted.
As if that wasn't enough - and it certainly is - the softball team will begin play in its Strike Out Cancer tournament against Auburn at 6 p.m. and Texas A&M at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, the baseball team will play a double header against Manhattan starting at 1 p.m. with Cooney throwing out the first pitch and current coach John McCormack receiving recognition for winning his 100th career game last week against Alabama
The women's basketball team will face Troy at 3 p.m. with a chance to clinch the No. 2 spot in the Sun Belt's East Division and a first-round bye.
The men's basketball team will also face Troy at 7 p.m. and it's senior night for both the men's and women's teams.
Softball continues its tournament with a game against Tulsa at 8 p.m.
Sunday, it's a baseball game against Manhattan with the start time moved up to noon.
Also the softball team plays Michigan State at 9 a.m.
I'd say that's enough for one weekend - and of course, we'll have it covered here at Owl Access starting with tonight's baseball game.
